It's Graduation Season

It’s true that most days the life of a teacher is stressful and exhausting. Many days feel like a whirlwind of students entering and exiting, papers being shuffled, passes being written, emails popping up and phones ringing and interrupting VERY important and interesting lessons. Most people have many of these stresses in their jobs as well, but one thing that the general public really misses out on is the pomp, circumstance, and excitement of graduation that I get to relive every year. I’m not being sarcastic (shocking, I know). Think back to your own graduation. You felt a sense of completion, relief, fear, and excitement all at once. You were on the brink of a new adventure. Finally, you would have some freedom in your life. At the same time you were nervous and nostalgic. You looked at peers you once hated and thought “I guess she’s not so bad.” You teared up “I will Remember You” by Sarah Mclaughlin because, well, “it’s so true!” The weather was warm, you had summer vacation ahead of you and then off to college, or work, or boot camp – whichever path you had chosen. All that mattered was that it wasn’t going to be high school anymore! You may have received awards and/or scholarships. You had grad parties to attend, a college dorm room to furnish, and you could do everything your own way...for once!

I relive these feelings of joy and excitement every year in my job. Every year I witness senior pranks, senior awards assemblies, senior slide shows, and graduation. In some ways, yes it is redundant, but each class brings their own personality to the event and every class brings the same sense of excitement. It’s a time of fresh starts and new adventures. It is a wonderful way to end the work year and I’m happy every year that I get to be transformed back to those days. Those days when anything seemed possible and I had only exciting new adventures in front of me.
